GLOSSARY
What is Near-Infrared (NIR) Therapy?
Light therapy using wavelengths (700-1100nm) that penetrate deep into tissue.
Definition
Near-infrared therapy uses light wavelengths between 700-1100 nanometers. These wavelengths can penetrate deeper into the body than visible light, reaching muscles, joints, and even brain tissue when applied transcranially. NIR light is particularly effective at stimulating cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria.
Why It Matters
Near-infrared wavelengths are central to most photobiomodulation protocols because of their ability to reach deep tissues and support cellular energy production.
